Growers Talk Value of Residuals

With significant soybean acreage being planted to a LibertyLink® system for 2010, I am encouraging producers now more than ever to remember the importance of incorporating pre-emergence residual herbicides containing an alternative mode of action into their program to provide a clean bed at planting, prevent competition from weeds and protect both GT and LibertyLink technology.

I recently heard from some growers on how they’ve been able to prevent herbicide resistance in their fields. The key to their success was consistent: residuals and preplant applications.

Edward Dement, a soybean, cotton and corn grower from Sikeston, Mo., had this advice for others: “With cotton we’ll put Reflex® down and on soybeans we’ll do something with Prefix®. You need to stay ahead of the weeds before they emerge, because once resistant weeds have emerged, you’re behind the eight ball. You’ll need to set down your residuals early and then overlap the chemistries to make sure you try to avoid any escapes.”

Felix Smart, Jr., a corn, rice and soybean grower from Altheimer, Ark., has experience using the LiberyLink system. “It’s not too difficult. As long as you put out Dual® preplant, I just don’t see any problems with growing the soybeans. Dual is another one of those herbicides that I don’t think you can ever play out. We start clean and we stay clean. I’m really excited about them [LibertyLink] just to break the cycle and use a new mode of action.”
