Minnesota Agronomist Fights Back Against Resistant Giant Ragweed

Paul Barchenger

Glyphosate weed resistance in parts of the U.S. is still on the cusp of becoming a much bigger issue. Thanks to people like Paul Barchenger, Hutchinson Cooperative, Hutchinson, Minn., growers in his area are a staying ahead of the curve.

Barchenger recognizes the signs that glyphosate herbicides aren't as effective as they used to be on certain weeds, such as giant ragweed and waterhemp. In addition, old herbicide resistance issues don't disappear with time.

Giant ragweed first showed up in 2004 and has become an increasing problem ever since

Barchenger understands the significance of glyphosate-resistant weeds and the havoc they can wreak. He encourages the use of pre-emergence herbicides in corn and soybeans, advises growers to use multiple modes of action, and, most importantly, to act now in the fight against glyphosate resistance.
