A Rising Storm

A storm is rising. That is the phrase used to describe the status of glyphosate resistance in Georgia last week. Many growers in eastern Georgia are struggling with glyphosate-resistant Palmer pigweed. According to some, there are fields where the pigweed infestation is so bad, that you can't drop a BB without hitting a pigweed plant.

This trip underscored the necessity of a residual. With weeds like pigweed, which can grow several inches in just one day, timely scouting is key. The amount of seed a Palmer pigweed plant produces also makes it a necessity to stay ahead of the weed. One escaped plant can produce enough seed to fill the seedbank for the following year, and makes matters exponentially worse. Make herbicide applications while weeds are still small, between 4 and 6 inches to help prevent weed competition.

Did you use a residual this season? How do you think it has impacted your crop?
