Roadblocks to Success – A Missouri Retailer’s Point of View
A Missouri retailer recently spoke at the Weed Science Society of America meeting on glyphosate-resistant weeds and how they are managing for success through his retail location.
He emphasized that the biggest challenge is many growers are economically driven. At most, 20 percent of soybean acres serviced by his company are receiving a pre-emergence application, though he estimates a significant increase in the use of soybean pre-emergence herbicides this season.
Another barrier to implementing a solid resistance management program is application timing and making sure to apply herbicides at the correct weed height. The ideal time to apply herbicide applications is when weeds are 4- to 6-inches in height. Too often weeds are much larger when herbicides are actually applied.
The introduction of glyphosate-tolerant technology was adopted so quickly because it was simple, easy and efficient. The speaker commented that in order to shift management practices from the current mindset, the plan needs to be simple and easy, as well.
Syngenta is dedicated to working with retailers in Missouri and throughout the United States to help encourage proper resistance management practices that include using a full rate of a pre-emergence residual herbicide in both corn and soybeans, rotating modes of action and implementing cultural control methods where possible.
What roadblocks have you come across in implementing a resistance management program? How do you overcome them?

Syngenta recently worked with Kevin Bradley at the University of Missouri to conduct a survey of retailers across the state and the perceived extent of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp. His results are highlighted in Glyphosate-resistant waterhemp estimated on 20,000 acres in Missouri. Results found by retailers across the state echo what was presented by our northern Missouri retailer at WSSA. Several weeds are confirmed resistant to glyphosate in Missouri and it proves to continue to challenge growers and retailers.
