Take Steps Now for a Successful 2009 Crop
In a recent article in
The Prairie Star, several ideas to help pave the way for a successful 2009 crop were suggested. Here are a few tips to help start the season on the right foot:
- Apply glyphosate at the right time-Syngenta recommends applying glyphosate when weeds are small, not more than 4 to 6 inches or, about the size of a pop can.
- When deciding what to plant also examine herbicide needs.
- Scout for weeds and identify them correctly. Identifying weed escapes can leads to thwarting potential resistance early. Most importantly, growers need to correctly identify weeds to ensure proper herbicide control options are used.
Having a multi-year resistance management plan in place can sustain profitability in the long run. In addition to those suggested in Prairie Star, Syngenta offers other suggestions for a healthy crop:
- Use multiple modes of action in addition to glyphosate
- Use cultural methods where possible such as rotating crops and implementing tillage
- Use full rates
