Resistance Fighters Step Up

As harvest nears closer, the evidence left behind by uncontrolled weeds becomes more obvious. Whether that is in difficulty harvesting; lower yields on the monitor; or overgrown, mature weeds still present in the field. As growers are beginning to think about what can be done differently next year, innovative retailers, agronomists and growers across the Midwest are sharing ways to out-smart the weeds that have out-smarted glyphosate.  From Ohio to Kansas and Minnesota to Arkansas, these experts are spreading the strategies they rely on to prevent problems with glyphosate resistant weeds:
  • Pre-emergence herbicide applications with residual weed control
  • Tank mixes with glyphosate that include another mode of action
  • Fall weed control applications
  • Crop rotation between conventional and glyphosate-tolerant crops
  • Full herbicide rates for both glyphosate and residual herbicides
  • Tillage

Recent studies found that uncontrolled weeds cost growers more than $7.5 billion every year, and widespread resistance would only increase this number.  Those working to stay ahead of resistance are protecting against these economic losses.  And, by sharing best management practices, these resistance fighters are doing their part in educate the industry on the importance of proactively managing glyphosate-resistant weeds.
