Glyphosate Resistance in the South – Manage Proactively, Not Passively
A Webinar held for southern retailers gave further insight into glyphosate resistance management. The Webinar included three panelists:
- Dr. Ken Smith, University of Arkansas professor and extension weed scientist
- Dr. Trey Koger, Mississippi State University extension weed scientist
- Mr. Chuck Foresman, manager of weed resistance strategies for Syngenta Crop Protection
These university and Syngenta experts discussed comprehensive solutions for glyphosate weed resistance. They focused on specific weeds, like Palmer pigweed, which continue to show resistant populations in southern fields. Overall, the panelists stressed the importance of proactive management to minimize resistance and preserve herbicide technologies. Participants were able to submit questions online for the experts to address. Here is what they said.
1. With the price of glyphosate on the rise, do you see this as another opportunity for alternative burndown applications?
With the price of glyphosate increasing, other products are becoming more attractive — things like Gramoxone Inteon®, which is an outstanding product. From an economic standpoint, comparing it to a glyphosate program, the burndown application brings a lot of control to the table and it throws another mode of action that we really need.
2. How, if at all, does Roundup Ready® Flex cotton affect glyphosate resistance and management programs?
Bottom line, it shouldn’t matter what kind of cotton we are planting — we need to treat them like conventional varieties. If we manage it correctly by altering modes of action, there should be nothing to worry about. If we do it wrong and rely only on glyphosate, it will allow the resistance we already have to explode on us.
