Market leaning in favor of fighting glyphosate resistance

Alternating chemicals and changing modes of action are ways growers can manage glyphosate resistance. Now, according to a February article on Agriculture Online, glyphosate application rates are on the rise, justifying the use of, or switch to, other herbicides.

In soybeans, applying a pre-emergence/post-emergence herbicide application to the field is just as cost effective as two rounds of post-emergence glyphosate. Kevin Bradley, University of Missouri Extension weed scientist, recommends several pre-emergence herbicide options for soybeans, including Prefix and Boundary®. In addition, a pre-emergence application introduces another mode of action into the system, helping to fight against resistant development.

With four-percent of Missouri acres with glyphosate-resistant waterhemp (2007 survey of agriculture retailers), alternating chemistries is a must. Not only is the market making it more economical to include a residual, pre-emergence herbicide application, but the value gained in yield potential in the future due to the use of the best management practices now is the right investment.

What herbicide options, if any, will you be changing this year? How does glyphosate resistance management fit into your decision making process?
