Control Weeds Early – Need More Reasons?

There has been a lot of talk lately about the importance of controlling weeds early, a central component to a sound resistance management program.  A study conducted this year shows yet another economic benefit that comes from controlling weeds early in corn: It saves nutrients in the soil, reducing the cost of inputs.

As nutrient costs rise, it is even more important for growers to make sure they are getting the most out of each application.  Getting to weeds while they are small has proven to preserve nutrients like nitrogen and potassium in the soil, because weeds are highly competitive for nutrients.

The use of a two-pass herbicide program has proven to be the best way to manage weeds.  This method ensures the weeds do not have a chance to significantly compete to reduce crop yield and quality.    And, with the additional benefit of resistance management as, it’s a win-win situation.
