Markets Bring More Rotational Options

Although there was a significant increase in corn acres planted this year, many areas across the Delta region are more interested in planting wheat this fall.

Planting a new crop into a corn and soybean rotation is an excellent way to manage against resistance. Planting wheat into the rotation offers new herbicide options and to address the weed spectrum in the field, reducing the risk for resistance development.  In addition to ryegrass and wild onion/garlic, glyphosate-resistant marestail (horseweed) has been an increasing issue in wheat, and can be addressed with a different arsenal of chemistries available for cereals crops. A recent article in Delta Farm Press offers weed management recommendations for growers planting wheat this fall.  Syngenta offers several resources for managing resistance in cereals, including the cereals Myth Buster and the cereals resistance management technical bulletin.
