Shifting Perceptions About Glyphosate Resistance

Since herbicide resistance started to become a concern many years ago, there are more resources than ever to learn about how to manage and delay it.  For example, the Solutions Module on the Resistance Fighter™ Web site offers comprehensive solutions based on individual information. And, university Web sites have a host of information about resistance and offer recommendations about the best management practices to delay the onset of its development.

Although new states, such as Illinois, are still confirming first cases of glyphosate resistance, awareness has also increased and it has caused the perception of the problem to shift amongst growers.  The growing number of cases makes it hard to ignore. And, that is causing more growers to take notice and really start to take proactive steps to make sure it doesn’t happen on their fields.  Growers are having success managing resistance across the country, and they are learning that there are agronomic and economic benefits to these practices.  For instance, using a pre-emergence residual herbicide can increase yields and reduce the risk of herbicide resistance at the same time.

There is still room for growth, but the important fact is that the knowledge is increasing.  And as they say, knowledge is power. Where do you think information is still lacking when educating on glyphosate resistance management? How well do you think the consequences of glyphosate-resistant weeds are understood?
