Southern Growers Still Struggling with Horseweed

Southern growers often are faced with few choices to battle glyphosate-resistant horseweed in their soybeans and cotton.  In each of these crops, a burndown becomes critical. In a recent article, Arkansas Extension Weed Specialist Bob Scott says that in soybeans, there aren’t any excellent options for post-emergence resistant horseweed.  In cotton, it is even more important to manage prior to planting, as there are basically no options to control in-season.

As Scott outlines, solutions for control of glyphosate-resistant horseweed can be an intricate process. Timing, weather, herbicide selection, economics and other factors all play a role. And, decisions will only continue to be complicated as additional weed species challenge control with glyphosate herbicides.

In what ways have glyphosate-tolerant weeds affected your management practices? In addition to horseweed, what other weeds are influencing decisions? What factors shape the choices in your weed control program? Have you found success practicing any of these management strategies?
