Southern Experts Discuss Glyphosate Resistance on Recent Webinar
During a recent Syngenta-sponsored Webinar, U.S. and global university and Syngenta experts discussed the extent of glyphosate resistance facing Southern producers. Some are facing a problem so large it could potentially put them out of business. Others may soon be looking at a world where glyphosate is no longer effective on some of their most problematic weeds.
A March 30, 2007 article in Mid-South Farmer focused on a section of the Webinar that discussed glyphosate-resistant Palmer pigweed and the potential threat it poses to the cotton industry. Speaker Larry Steckel, University of Tennessee Extension weed specialist, likened Palmer pigweed to the boll weevil, emphasizing the importance of using pre-emergent herbicides in management plans as a way to slow resistance.
If you have had first-hand experience with glyphosate-resistant Palmer pigweed, what have you done to combat it? What economic consequences have you faced because of Palmer pigweed?
