Tougher glyphosate-resistant volunteer corn?
In a recent article in Farm & Ranch Guide, Mike Owen, Iowa State University Extension weed specialist, stated that this year there is an increased likelihood that growers will see more volunteer corn. Owen goes on to say that the volunteer corn growers now face has a higher probability of being glyphosate-resistant. This can happen when planting soybeans if glyphosate-resistant corn was planted the previous year in the same field, and it can also happen through pollen drift from neighboring glyphosate-resistant corn fields. The glyphosate-tolerant system for controlling volunteer corn is not a simple one, Own says, so it is important to have a good management system in place.
Syngenta recommends following a planned program with a different monde of action in order to eradicate volunteer crops and eliminate a costly clean-up post trip. In soybeans, a postemergence herbicide is needed to keep fields clean of volunteer corn. Syngenta recommends Fusilade® DX for this role. Fusilade offers highly cost-effective control of volunteer corn and plays a key role in controlling both annual and perennial grasses. It also works in all tillage situations and can be tankmixed with a variety of broadleaf herbicides.
